Blasphemy! Mistah Bates is a Beatrix Potter character come to life.

Ok, so Mr. Bates does sort of naively and ridiculously not tell Anna anything about Vera’s threats, but is this really surprising or unacceptable? Bates embodies the typical English Gentleman (even though he’s a lowly valet) and the English Gentleman’s sense of duty and honor would require him to keep Anna out of this affair and deal with it on his own. By keeping her out of it and taking off with Vera he is doing the noble thing. It’s silly and foolish that he doesn’t tell Anna anything, but it makes sense given who Bates is as a person.
And Bates isn’t dumb. He knows Anna is smart and was going to figure out he was in the pub the next town over eventually. And Anna is smart enough not to force the issue too hard. He is going to continue to treat her like a Lady, even though she insists that she isn’t one and therefore he shouldn’t, but it is Bate’s honor and respect that makes him act so. It’s noble, and nobility is a little foolish, but there it is.
