We want to go to there.
“Stacks” is an outdoor bookshelf installation by artist David Harper made of books and wood.
The theme for Harper’s installation: “these trees shall be my books,” comes from William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” but the goal of the work goes far beyond Orlando’s wish to immortalize Rosalind. Harper seeks to immortalize the love of knowledge, and the homage owed to the living things we use to create stores of knowledge for all to study. “STACKS” captures the transformation from living tree to store of knowledge. Before this piece was installed at the Stone Quarry Art Park it was displayed in the courtyard to the Art and Design building at my college. I walked past it everyday for an entire semester and I think I will always reblog pictures of it because I love it so much.
The “books” on the shelves closest to the tree are carved out of wood. They were getting snowed on and my friends and I were worried the books were going to be ruined so we checked to see if they were real books…. we were that worried… about the books…
I highly recommend a trip out to Cazenovia to the art park, but only if you’re in the area. And go in the summer. There’s not much else to do in Cazenovia except if you like to tour houses you can go to the Lorenzo House, but other than that… get a drink at the Seven Stone Steps? Or a meal, you get a fresh baked popover while you’re waiting for your food.
