30 Day Book Challenge
Day 12 - The first novel you remember reading.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This is the first novel I remember reading on my own. I was either five or six and I thought it was just the most wonderful book I had ever read. I was so annoyed when I found out how much they’d changed for the movie and was a “child lit-snob” whenever people talked about how much they loved the movie but hadn’t read the book (they didn’t know how much better the book was!).
Fun fact, I saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time on TBS when I was in college. I hated it.
Even more Fun Facts: the town of Chittenango, NY, the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, has capitalized on his works and have many Oz themed establishments, including a fairly shitty Oz Museum and brick sidewalks that have been painted yellow; they also have what they call “Oz-Stravaganza” every summer for which the remaining living actors who played the Munchkins are often in attendance, as of 2004, and apparently this year Gregory Maguire.
